(On Rumplestiltskin's voice)“There’s no way I could speak in my normal voice while looking so extraordinary and while having this bizarre stuff to say,” the actor reasoned. “I tried many different types of voices and the thing that I landed on was completely by chance, really, thanks to my son. He was wandering though the house making these high-pitched voices and sounds I thought, ‘Rumpelstiltskin has a child-like quality to him, he kind of enjoys gleefully tricking people.’”

There's something about these performances in the past few years. In a slight sense it’s about age but without a doubt it has also given me what I used to call weight. I remember when I was in Scotland and I first started acting with these older actors and they had weight. They didn’t have to act. It was just there. I think I’m finally on that path to gravitas.“

It gave me the opportunity to define this character for a whole new generation… certain parts you play all you’re thinking about perhaps is oh… voice or maybe movement. This was a combination of everything. I had to think about how he was going to move, how he was going to look, how he was going to sound… my six year old son is always wandering about the house with a strange voice saying [random noises] and I was like…”

On the discussion from the last thread about anger Rumple might have felt towards Emma:

Wow, that's a tough one. I think part of the problem is that I can't imagine Rumple not feeling anger over the loss of Bae. It also seems likely he might feel upset at people who don't feel that loss.

But, those normal feelings. There's a difference between what you feel and how those feelings get turned into action--or what actions they become.

I think, if Rumple turned those actions into revenge, he would say so. While Rumple keeps a lot of things close in, when a raw feeling--like anger--gets turned into action, he tends to say it.

Or he tends to say what he consciously sees as the cause of the anger. But, since he's sometimes having some degree of denial, it gets complicated. However, something he would see as harm or betrayal of someone he loves is the kind of thing he tends to able to admit and put into words.

So, for example, he can admit being angry at Milah for abandoning Bae (I don't know if he would have swallowed any anger or still crushed her heart if he'd only been angry for how she treated him).

Bae skins knee, Rumple turns guy into snail, steps on him--and clearly states why.

Rumple believes Moe tortured Belle and drove her to suicide. Despite there being a curse and Rumple trying to hide that he remembers from Regina, he openly refers to Belle and what happened to her while beating on Moe.

Beating Hook with the cane after Hook threatens Belle, throwing a fireball at Hook after he shoots Belle and later trying to kill him manually.

He states clearly to Regina why he's summoning the wraith.

I think Rumple would have at least implied that he was angry at how Emma acted after Bae died. I also think he might have found a way to suck her into the hat more directly rather than give Emma the choice and even state reasons not to do it (although he ultimately seemed to be trying to talk her into it).

But, I reserve the right to change my mind.

Actually this convo regarding Rumple and Emma was happening on the Rumbelle thread. It should have been happening on this thread but one thing lead to another and we got sidetracked.

I think the debate is really just fans debating whether or not Rumple should have been angry with Emma for taking up with Killian not if he did.

Kelaine, like you said, Rumple gave no indication that he was angry with Emma.
Plus Seamstress90 found the quote below from Eddy that basically confirms Rumple acted out of fear not anger or revenge.

Also, Emma definitely showed that she felt Neal's loss. She cried plenty about it in 3B and in 4x19 she lunged at Zelena when she taunted Emma about Neal's death.

That quote from Eddy just makes me convinced that Rumple won't miss being the DO that much. Yeah, it's going to be scary for him to be without magic, but I think he's also relieved that he no longer needs to worry about the dagger.

I think so too. I think he'll miss being powerful and almost "untouchable" especially since, besides 3b, no one succesfully crossed him or Belle. I suspect he'll look for another source to obtain power/magic.

I agree. I think he will struggle not having magic anymore but I think not having that darkness anymore will be a relief.

I do think it will come as a shock to him though that he can be happy without magic. He was so used to it. It will take some adjusting.

But I agree, A&E have said several things like this that make me think they are setting up redemption for Rumple.
